Advocacy

For over 50 years, EAA has worked to give wings not only to EAA members, but everyone involved in the spirit of aviation. Whether concentrating on general, recreational or sport aviation, the EAA Industry & Regulatory staff focuses on influencing the development of laws, regulations and policies that benefit all generations of flight enthusiasts.

EAA, in partnership with the FAA, cooperatively seeks government solutions, striving to be an equal associate rather than an adversary. A key component to our success is the ability to consult with industry leaders who volunteer through the EAA.

EAA Advocacy staff’s guiding principles:

  • Help you get in, help you go further.
EAA worksto reduce regulatory and bureaucratic aviation barriers. By doing so, we make participation easier for those who we invite, introduce, and inspire to pursue aviation.
  • Make your participation easier, better, and more affordable.
EAA facilitates solutions to government-related issues by providing direct advice, counsel and contacts to political and regulatory leaders. We also make aviation endeavors more affordable by developing and promoting changes to laws and regulations to reduce financial costs.
  • Make it fun and enjoyable.
EAA joins members and special interest groups with government officials and agencies to create a more positive and informed flight population.
  • Preserve the heritage and support the future.
EAA works to ensure that regulations and laws affecting personal aviation support the preservation and continued safe operation of classic aircraft.

The Sport Pilot (SP) and Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA) Initiative

The SP and LSA Initiative is a prime example of EAA developing a concept to make flying more affordable and enjoyable. Once a concept is developed, EAA works hand-in-hand with government officials, aerospace industry experts and EAA members to get the job done. The Initiative is now the fastest growing general and recreational aviation industry in the world.

Sport Pilots can now fly with a current and valid driver’s license with no FAA medical certificate required. In addition, over the past three years 37 aircraft manufacturers have introduced over 50 models of Light-Sport Aircraft, all of which can be purchased for less than half the cost of a new type-certified aircraft.

User Fees and Higher General Aviation Fuel Taxes

EAA is leading the fight against both the user fees and higher fuel taxes proposed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“EAA and other General Aviation associations view the current method to fund the aviation trust fund--taxes on aviation fuel and airline passenger tickets--as the fairest, most equitable way to pay for ATC as well as modernization of the system. The current method is also generating record amounts for the trust fund.  We are united as a general aviation community.” Tom Poberezny, EAA President

The EAA Industry & Regulatory staff is committed to giving wings to upcoming generations. Their continued support allows EAA to uphold its promise to youth that their dreams of flight are achievable, and that people are willing to support theirs and EAA’s futures.
